Keeping it Causal in All Neutrals

I feel like neutrals can get a bad rap – like they should always be in the background or something. However, I find that most of my closet is neutral colors and that’s just fine by me! FYI traditional neutrals are grey, olive green, black, brown, white, and navy. Yes, adding a pop of color can make an outfit more visually interesting, but neutrals can stand on their own too.

One tip for elevating an outfit full of neutrals is to add a “completer piece.” Does anyone else remember this term from What Not to Wear? I miss that show, I learned so much about figure flattering fashion from watching it! Anyway, a completer piece is that extra layer or bold accessory that takes a somewhat basic look to a look that really draws attention.

In the case of this outfit the completer piece would be my straw hat. This one was a random $5 purchase from AE’s clearance section to get free shipping, but I ended up loving it! A boater hat is a great choice for summer and they come in many styles.

This one is so cute! I love the crochet band. And this one is a great classic option. The site listed mine as a wide brim fedora, but it’s actually more of a boater hat due to the flat crown (top) and brim. This one is very affordable and this super wide brim boater hat would work for many women.

In fall/winter I usually go for extra layers of warmth as my completer pieces, but when the temps rise, lightweight accessories just make more sense. This is a very causal look, but the nude, low heels, bag, and hat take it up a notch or two.

This outfit would work just as well with flats, but I chose these low block heeled pumps to give me a bit of extra length in my legs – and they feel like flats! I seriously can’t stop wearing them.

IMO heels are like lipstick – they take some getting used to if they’re not something you usually wear, but they quickly become staples and you end up wondering why you went without for so long. You just have to try them on, possibly add some extra cushioning, and make sure the fit is right. Blisters/pain are no fun at all. Obvi!

I just happened to stumble upon my purse for a steal when I saw the mini version of my Rebecca Minkoff “love” bag go on sale during Nordstrom’s anniversary sale that just ended. Mine is the middle size and they also sell a jumbo sized one. I always do that – when I see something I like online I immediately do a web search for the same item and see what comes up.

Nine out of ten times I find it somewhere else for a lower price! FYI the price has gone up a bit, but it’s still on sale and you can get 15% of your first purchase by signing up for their emails. I have already worn the heck out of this bag and I just got it a few weeks ago. It’s so versatile due to the color and you can wear it 3 ways!

My tee is a favorite – I wear it all the time. I also like the raw edge side slit tee Lush just came out with. You can never have too many great tees!

I looked around and while my shorts don’t seem to be available online anymore (they’re a rare in-store purchase from Express), I found this pair and this pair. Both of which seem awesome! I’m all about comfort whenever possible and this type of unstructured short feels amazing on a hot day. I could seriously sleep in it. Sounds a little weird, but that’s a super useful feature when traveling.

What’s your favorite way to jazz up an outfit?

See you soon friend! Love, Kate

Jumpsuit Love

Jumpsuits seem to be one of those pieces that most women like the look of, but many are afraid to try or feel is a style that’s just not for them. Today I’m making an argument for jumpsuits for everyone!

There are a plethora of options within the jumpsuit genre – it’s really just a matter of finding the one that suits you most. Heck, even Andy Cohen got in on the action with a “RompHim.” Have you heard of this term? A RompHim is just the male version of a romper (AKA a short jumpsuit.)

My jumpsuit is from a few years back, but here’s F21’s newest version of it and here’s another great option.  I also really like this one and this one. And here’s plus size option #1plus option #2, and plus option #3. They can be sooo flattering! I also love the idea of a striped jumpsuit to make even more of a statement.

The key to finding the right jumpsuit means finding the right fit for your body. For example, I love the tapered legs and elastic waist on this romper as it keeps this look comfortable and flattering. A defined waist is a must and you might find that a belt is a nice touch. The options are truly endless.

For those with more of a boyish shape (btw I’m thinking we need a better term for those with really slender bodies – if you have a great one you use please share in the comments!), a really formfitting jumpsuit – also called a catsuit – can be a fab way to create more curves. Like this one if you’re ballsy!

It’s also important to find a jumpsuit/romper with the right length for your waist. I’m short waisted so sometimes I find jumpsuits to be too long in the torso while longer waisted ladies often have the opposite problem – the dreaded camel toe.

In addition, make sure you get one that is easy to get on and off because when you have to use the restroom you have to fully strip down. It’s a con for sure, but I’m willing to make that sacrifice from time to time 🙂

They are pretty darn versatile. I could have paired this jumpsuit with booties, pumps, wedges, or even flats and a long necklace or choker would have also worked really well. It all just depends on the vibe one is going for. This outfit was for a night out with my man, so I wanted to get a little fancy/sexy for date night.

This is the newest version of my clutch. It’s a bargain! The shape is slightly different, but otherwise it’s the same. I really like how it’s embellished wth crystals on the front (which screams formal), but it also has a more subdued silver back. Just flip it to the other side depending on the occasion.

My ankle strap heels are from DSW and I’m so glad I bought them! I previously wore them with my striped OTS (off the shoulder) dress in this post. They are crazy comfortable, considering how high they are, and they go with seriously everything. I have found that ankle straps really help with the stability factor. How adorable are these frayed satin heels? They would work just as well with this look. And these are another really cool and affordable option.

White House Black Market has a great selection of higher quality (compared to fast fashion brands like F21) accessories, like this necklace. I want it! If you’re thinking the price tag is a bit high I can vouch for the quality – my WHBM heels and jewelry have really held up!

Plus if you sign up to be a part of their mailing list you’ll get coupons quite often and they often run promotions where you can get 50% off. Mine is from waaaay back, but I found this one, this one, and this one that all have a similar vibe.

I’d say the most important part of finding the right jumpsuit is trying on a bunch of different styles and then going with the one that makes you feel hot. Fashion used to have very defined “rules,” but these days anything goes! If you like it and it makes you feel confident – then wear it. Confidence is what takes an outfit to the next level!

What has your experience been with jumpsuits and rompers?

Thank you for visiting! Have a lovely day. XO, Kate

Dressing up Denim Shorts

This summer has been really humid so far, it’s been really weird! We’re usually on the dryer side here so this weather actually has been giving me a tropical getaway kind of vibe – which is fine by me! It’s probably a good thing as we’re approaching fire season. To beat the heat I’ve been all about flowy tops and shorts lately.

I’m not usually one to wear heels with shorts, but I just can’t do jeans in this weather and for some reason I just haven’t been wearing dresses as much as usual. So I thought I’d create a date night look using one of my favorite pairs of shorts.

These shorts are super soft and I love the slightly longer length. There’s a reason this pair has a cumulative review of 5 stars. American Eagle’s Denim X is where it’s at! I can’t believe I spent so many years wearing jeans that have no give. No more my friends!

I showcased this double layer cami from Express in an earlier post and while it’s no longer available Express has some other really cute options right now. Here are my top picks: 1, 2, 3.

You can’t go wrong with a black cami, it’s so versatile! Just make sure you invest in  a good strapless bra – visible bra straps kill a look so quickly. This one is my fav for good support and comfort.

How fun are these colorful heels? I’m obsessed with the embroidery. Even though they’re pretty darn high, they’re more comfortable than you’d think thanks to some well placed padding.

I don’t think the pictures online do them justice. Check out the reviews, others seem to love them too! FYI they are available in wide, woo hoo!

And of course what says summer ’17 more than a great pair of tassel earrings? These are from F21 and sold out quickly, but I found these, these, and these that are similar and also very cute. They add instant pizazz to any basic look.

What’s your favorite summertime look?

Thanks for visiting! Kisses, Kate

Summertime Sparkle

Leith is an awesome brand; if you haven’t checked them out you should! Not only it is a very affordable line, but they are always coming out with new, classic and chic pieces. I have this dress in black and pink and I love them both.

A bodycon – aka body conscious – dress is great for showing off one’s curves! This is also the brand that I showcased in this post from earlier this year. That dress is still available in some sizes (I’m wearing a L in this dress and a M in the other post FYI, it just depends on how form fitting you want it to look) and the white version is on sale! I highly recommend it! It’s perfect for fall as the fabric is on the thicker side.

While this V-Neck Bodycon is not currently available, I found some dupes here and here (both under $20!). And how cute is this tank version and this pink one?! I’ve noticed that certain Leith pieces will sell out, but then they bring them back shortly thereafter, often in more colors. I bet this dress will come back in stock and when it does I want to get another color.

This might sound a little funny, but since I’m always looking to maximize the wearability of my closet I sometimes buy an item that I’ll wear now, but I suspect will also make a good maternity dress. This is one of those pieces that I know would work well for that stage of life. Other reviewers and bloggers have mentioned how well it works on those with a baby bump and I agree – it’s important to accentuate your curves when pregnant to avoid looking bigger than you are.

A bodycon may not be as forgiving as some other cuts, but I’ve come to realize that trying to look like the stick thin model wearing it online is not just unrealistic, but I now don’t even want to. I like that I have curves. We’re the only ones who scrutinize ourselves so terribly – others are just admiring the view (and thinking about their own insecurities).

My clutch is under $20 and it’s available in 10 colors! It looks a lot more luxe than you’d expect for the price. I know I’ll get a lot of use from it for upcoming formal events. Here’s a rectangular one I also really like.

I actually got these shoes (on sale for under $35!) for free. Say what?! Yep! DSW surprised me by sending me a gift card after seeing an Instagram pic featuring a pair of their shoes. I bought these with it and I’m so glad I did!

They are PERFECT for any formal event. The height and wide toe strap combine to make them uber comfy. And who doesn’t love a glittery gold ankle strap heel? You cannot go wrong with a pair of gold or silver heels – they go with everything!

My bracelet is also from DSW. I love it! It’s already sold out, but this one and this one (under $10!) also caught my eye.

What’s your stance on bodycon dresses? Yea or nay?

Have a lovely day! Xoxo, Kate
