Off the Shoulder Striped Dress/Some Flat Shoe Options

Hey there! While it hasn’t felt like summer lately, I had to take this dress (wearing size L) for a spin anyway. I love it! It’s listed as a mini on the website, but it’s long enough that it doesn’t feel scandalous, it can be worn with or without the tie, and it’s not see through so it doesn’t require a slip. It’ll be awesome for those super hot days.

I’ll likely wear this dress quit a bit this summer, the only downside I’ve found so far is that it wrinkles really easily. But hey, it’s a lot more affordable than this dress that I had been eying! I actually can’t decide which way I like it better, tied or no tie. What do you think? Accentuating the waist is normally a must, but I quite like how it looks without being cinched at the waist. Maybe I’ll try it next with a belt…

As I get older I find I want to wear heels more and more often – maybe I associate them with being “grown up?” There’s something about a good pair of heels that just makes me feel girly and want to strut my stuff! I’ve wanted to get a pair of ankle strap sandals for a loong time now, but I guess I had the idea in my head that they wouldn’t be comfortable or I wouldn’t get much use from them.

I only bought these ankle strap heels on Memorial Day weekend (during my DSW shopping spree – the sales were crazy good!), but I can already tell I’ll wear them a lot. I’m asking myself why I waited so long! The key is treating them like jeans and trying on a ton of options until you find the right one. I tried on what felt like a million different versions of this shoe and this pair was the clear winner of the bunch.

The wider straps on these heels is what I think makes them more comfortable, plus they are under 4″, which is just too high for me to wear for any length of time. And they go with EVERYTHING! They are faux leather, so we’ll see if they hold up, but so far so good!

I know heels are not for everyone and I got a request for some ideas for cute, work appropriate flats. I found a ton on DSW’s website! I don’t wear flats all that much, unless it’s a summery sandal, because I tend to get blisters with flats. I’m considering buying a few pairs of flats now though, look how cute these (1 – perfect for work and they have great reviews, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 – great for dresses!, 7, 8, 9) are! I even found a lower heeled version of the pumps featured in my next post!

Don’t mind me, I’m just admiring the view – lol!

See you later! Love, Kate

Free People Sequin Slip Dress

This summer dress is so versatile and easy to wear. Not only does it have sequins (what girl doesn’t like a little sparkle??), but it works as a beach coverup, a day dress, or a going out dress. I bet this could even work as a maternity dress if one isn’t too far along!

Free People’s dresses are almost always meant to be oversized, but that leads to the risk of being overexposed, especially if you’re not model-thin. If you check out the link above you’ll see what I mean. Luckily I’ve been able to just size down, like I did in this dress. It worked out great!

It’s no longer available in black, but they have “amber” and “dogwood” (aka red) versions available on Free People’s website. Both colors seem really rich from the pics online.

It is on the sheer side, as it’s technically a slip, but you can wear a bodysuit (how gorgeous is this one?!), a bathing suit, or a slip underneath to add some coverage.

I have FP’s seamless romper in black and ivory and I wear them a good bit. They are super soft and a great option for a base layer for dresses, just be warned – they don’t have an opening at the crotch so you have to take it all off to go to the bathroom. It’s not that big of a deal for me as they are really stretchy.

Since this dress is already embellished I wanted to keep the shoes relatively simple and my Sam Edelman Gigi sandals (some colors are currently on sale!) in “gold boa” fit the bill nicely. They are very comfortable! www.samedelman.com always offers free shipping too 🙂

I consider them to be my airport shoes, since they slip on and off so easily and can be worn all day with no pain. I’ve had the same pair for many years now and they still look great. I’m considering buying another pair – they have a ton of colors! FYI Amazon sometimes sells them for as little as $20, depending on the size and color.

I dare you not to twirl in this pretty dress!

What’s your favorite kind of sparkle?

xoxo, Kate

Oxblood Suede Quilted Moto Jacket

Hey! Thanks for visiting my little corner of the internet.

I love this jacket!! I actually heard about it through Erica at www.fashionedchic.com. She has such awesome style!! I snagged it when it went on super sale during the holidays and I’m so glad I did! I usually stick to faux leather jackets, but this just feels SO much better than the faux stuff and I can tell it will really last.

Oxblood is such a great color and – as Mugatu from Zoolander would say – “it’s so hot right now.” It’s stands out a little more than your standard neutrals like black and brown, but it still feels like a neutral as it goes with almost anything! I get a lot of compliments on this one!

And guess what, it’s on **sale** and there are still some sizes left! This style was also offered in a brown color, but I tried it on in the store and it just wasn’t anything special. So far I’ve paired it with my go-to Old Navy Rockstar ripped blue skinnies and a white tee, with high waisted jeans and a bodysuit, a black lace dress, and this all black(ish) look. I love them all! It’s so freaking versatile.

Do you like my, “I’m on the phone” look? Lol! Trying to mix it up 😉

Lately I’ve been loving the half up topknot, it’s a great way to get my hair out of my face without putting it all up. Does anyone else feel like they look kind of bald with it all up? My fine haired sistas likely feel me on this!

By the by, these pics were taken in South Park and we stumbled upon the most interesting little shops while we were there. If you happen to be in the area you have to check out Tend. They have these super cool plant art pieces where the plans look alive, but they are actually preserved with glycerin. No upkeep! Plus the owner is super freaking awesome. Talk about good vibes…

Okay, enough blabbing. Later gators!

Cardiff Bike Ride

Hiya! I hope you’re staying warm and dry – I was just about to go for a walk when it started pouring out of nowhere! I guess that’s a sign it’s time for another blog post! Haha

Recently my friend Sarah and I took advantage of a gorgeous day and biked up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. It was so much fun! I got the usual “you’re wearing that?!” I can’t seem to ever be casual/dressed down enough for my friends. Maybe it’s just because we live in such a casual place? San Diego is flip flop central, after all. Does anyone else get any flak from their friends about their outfit choices or is it just me??

Yes, I did wear my Sam Edelman suede booties (still available in grey suede, saddle suede, and black and saddle leather – all on sale!!) to bike around town and I am not ashamed! When I converted to barefoot shoes I tossed all of my sneakers so I don’t have a lot of options to choose from and the barefoot shoes just aren’t a good fit for the platform pedals.

BTW if anyone reading this is interested in barefoot shoes I highly recommend them, but there are things one should know before transitioning from regular athletic shoes. I’ll do a post with my new fav pair and some tips soon, but just leave me a comment if you have any questions until then. They have completely solved my ankle issues and I love the stability and comfort they offer. Bye bye blisters!!

Sorry the pics are a little dark, we tried a few angles and full sun ended up being too sunny and the shade was a little too dark. We just couldn’t win!

I’m not sure if you can see the detail, but my booties actually have some color in the fringe. It’s a mix of black suede, burgundy suede, and silver. I love how it adds a little oomph to an otherwise fairly basic pair of ankle boots. Sarah compared my boots’ fringe to a grown up version of bike streamers. Remember those?? Fun!

My Zella “Live in Leggings” were a perfect match for the ride and kept me oh so comfy. I paired my leggings with my trusty H&M tank top, which is old, but here’s a similar option. Just size up for a more relaxed fit. I LOVE H&M’s basics section, I get so much use out of my tees and tanks and they are very affordable.

Side note: how cute is this cardi? I saw it as I was getting the link for the tank and I want it!! Grr, not shopping is really hard.

My sweater has sold out, but I’ve linked some similar options here, here, and here. It was always oversized, but it keeps growing every time I wear it. The hazards of knitwear, eh? Ha! I wouldn’t say it’s super warm, but it is super cute and well-suited for the mild SD climate.

I got my Smith sunnies earlier this year and I really like them. The gold on the bottom of the lenses are a nice little touch. I also threw on a necklace from Forever 21. What they have available is always changing, but I can almost always find a cute boho necklace for a ridiculously cheap price.

Well, I gotta get to making some dinner, so farewell and see ya next time! Thanks for visiting!

Workin’ the Work Style

Hi there! TGIF!

Here’s a recent work to evening look I really liked. Just take off the jacket and boom – you’re ready for drinks.

I love this top, it goes with everything! It’s on sale in both colors (the dandelion color is great for warmer toned ladies) right now! The waffle detail is such a nice touch and it’s a great choice for big eating occasions 😉 Every time I wear this one I get at least one, “where’d you get that?!” I bought it from Macy’s, but I saw it’s available online through a few stores.

This jacket was another great buy. It’s old and from H&M, but Nordstrom has a lot of super cute dupes! I also saw it’s also available at Poshmark in at least one size. Good old Poshmark…if I miss buying something before it’s sold out in stores often I can find it there.

These shoes are not for the faint of heart, but they are awesome to look at and I can handle them in small doses. They are no longer available in stores, but I found this similar pair for a great price!

I actually found these J Brand skinnies at a local consignment store. I have never had a coated pair of jeans before, but I always wanted some. These fit the bill nicely, although they are technically listed online as “sateen.”

If you happen to be in the area, La Mesa actually has a few little boutiques and consignment stores that have surprisingly great stuff for awesome prices! Can you believe I got these for $12? I was stoked!!

I picked up this rose gold necklace somewhat recently (don’t worry, I’m staying strong and and so far I’m sticking to my no shopping challenge!) from Express and I like it a lot. I’m super into rose gold right now and -bonus – it goes with every skin tone! I can’t wait to wear it with a low cut jumpsuit I have…

As usual, I’m putting my Marc by Marc Jacobs cell phone wallet to good use. I’ve never been one to buy higher end wallets, but after having used this wallet daily for a year or so I have changed my tune. It still looks brand new and I love that it holds everything I need so I don’t always have to schlep a purse with me. FYI it’s 49% off at Nordstrom Rack right now! Worth every penny.

Ok, that’s enough for today. I hope you have an awesome weekend!
